What Happened to Indian Lakes Resort?

By Anna Duncan

Indian Lakes Resort was once a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Located in Bloomingdale, Illinois, it was a sprawling property boasting 200 acres of land, three golf courses, multiple restaurants, and over 300 guest rooms. However, the resort has since fallen on hard times and is no longer in operation.

History of Indian Lakes Resort

Indian Lakes Resort first opened its doors in 1964 as a small motel with just 30 rooms. Over the years, it expanded its offerings to include multiple restaurants and bars, conference facilities, and recreational amenities such as golf courses and tennis courts.

The resort’s popularity peaked in the 1980s when it hosted events like the Miss USA pageant and drew high-profile guests like Ronald Reagan. However, as time went on, the property began to suffer from neglect as ownership changed hands multiple times.

The Decline of Indian Lakes Resort

The resort’s decline began in earnest in the early 2000s when it was sold to a new owner who had big plans for the property. Unfortunately, those plans never came to fruition due to financial troubles that forced the resort into bankruptcy.

After several failed attempts to revive the property under new ownership, Indian Lakes Resort closed its doors for good in 2016. The golf courses were sold off to a private developer while the rest of the property remained abandoned.

Current State of Indian Lakes Resort

Today, Indian Lakes Resort sits empty and deteriorating. The once-beautiful grounds are overgrown with weeds and littered with debris. Some of the buildings have been vandalized or suffered damage from neglect while others remain intact but empty.

Despite efforts by local officials to find new buyers for the property or repurpose it for other uses like affordable housing or a park district facility, so far nothing has come to fruition.

The Future of Indian Lakes Resort

While the future of Indian Lakes Resort remains uncertain, it’s clear that something needs to be done to address the blight and decay that has taken hold on the property. Whatever its ultimate fate, it’s important that this once-great resort is not allowed to continue deteriorating and becoming an eyesore in the community.

In conclusion, Indian Lakes Resort was once a thriving destination for tourists and locals alike but has since fallen into disrepair. While its future remains uncertain, it’s clear that something needs to be done to address the damage and blight that has taken hold on the property.
