How Do You Become a Cruise Ship Paramedic?

By Anna Duncan

Cruise ship paramedics provide medical services to passengers and crew members at sea. With the ever-increasing number of cruise ships, the demand for qualified paramedics is also increasing. Becoming a cruise ship paramedic requires specialized training, certification and experience.

Education and Certification

To become a cruise ship paramedic, you must first complete an approved paramedics training program or obtain a degree in Paramedic Sciences. Most paramedics training programs are offered through community colleges, technical schools or universities. After completing the training program, you will need to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam in order to be certified as a paramedic.

Experience

Most cruise lines require that cruise ship paramedics have at least two years of experience working as an emergency medical technician (EMT) or paramedic prior to being considered for a job on board their ships. This experience should include both emergency and non-emergency medical treatment situations. Additionally, many cruise lines prefer that applicants have specialized experience in areas such as pediatric care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), and trauma care.

Other Requirements
In addition to having the necessary education and experience, many cruise lines also require that applicants pass a physical examination and obtain BLS certification from the American Heart Association prior to being hired as a cruise ship paramedic. Additionally, some cruise lines may also require that applicants have knowledge of basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite and email applications.
