Did the Viking Sky Cruise Ship Sink?

By Robert Palmer

The Viking Sky Cruise Ship had a frightening experience this past weekend. On March 23rd, the cruise ship with approximately 1,300 passengers and crew aboard found itself in a dire situation as it encountered severe weather off the coast of Norway. The stormy conditions caused the ship to suffer from engine failure, putting its passengers and crew in an extremely dangerous situation.

The Viking Sky sent out a mayday call as it drifted dangerously close to some of the rocky Norwegian islands. As soon as they received the distress signal, Norwegian rescue teams raced to the scene. Helicopters were used to airlift around 500 people off of the ship due to the rough seas that made evacuation by boat impossible.

The remaining passengers and crew stayed on board for days until tugs were able to tow Viking Sky into the nearby port of Molde. During this time, three people were reported dead from medical issues unrelated to the incident and 15 others needed medical treatment for various injuries.

Conclusion:

In short, no, Viking Sky did not sink – it was successfully towed into port by rescue tugs after suffering an engine failure due to rough seas. While three people tragically passed away during this ordeal and many more were injured, thankfully all remaining passengers and crew members were rescued.
