Do People Live in La Défense Paris?

By Robert Palmer

La Défense is a major business district located just west of Paris. Known for its towering skyscrapers and modern architecture, it’s often referred to as the “mini Manhattan” of France. But amidst all the office buildings and commercial spaces, one might wonder – do people actually live in La Défense?

The Short Answer: No, La Défense is primarily a business district and does not have any residential areas.

However, just because people don’t live in La Défense doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. In fact, the area has a lot to offer for those interested in modern architecture and design.

The History of La Défense:

The origins of La Défense can be traced back to the 1950s when it was decided that Paris needed a new modern business district. The location chosen was just outside the city center, on land that had previously been used for military purposes.

Construction on La Défense began in the 1960s and continued throughout the following decades. Today, it’s home to over 3 million square meters of office space and attracts businesses from around the world.

What You Can See and Do in La Défense:

While there may not be any residential areas in La Défense, there are still plenty of things to see and do in this bustling business district. Here are just a few examples:

  • Take in the Architecture: With its towering skyscrapers and modern design, La Défense is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in architecture or design.
  • Shop at Les Quatre Temps: This massive shopping center has over 250 stores selling everything from clothing to home goods.
  • Visit CNIT: The Centre of New Industries and Technologies is a massive convention center that hosts events throughout the year.
  • Enjoy the Art: La Défense is home to several public art installations, including sculptures and murals.

The Future of La Défense:

While La Défense has already come a long way since its inception in the 1960s, there are still plans for further development in the future. In fact, a new project called “Hermitage Plaza” is currently underway, which will bring even more office space, residential buildings, and retail space to the area.

So while people may not live in La Défense now, that could change in the future. For now though, visitors can enjoy all that this modern business district has to offer.
