By Michael Ferguson

Are you planning a road trip down the West Coast but unsure of how long it will take? The answer is not so straightforward as it depends on various factors such as your starting point, final destination, and the number of stops you plan to make along the way. However, we have put together a rough itinerary for a West Coast road trip that you can use as a guide.

Starting Point: Seattle, Washington

If your starting point is Seattle, Washington, the first stop on your itinerary should be Portland, Oregon. This drive takes approximately three hours via Interstate 5 South. Once in Portland, spend a day exploring the city’s famous food scene and quirky neighborhoods like Alberta and Hawthorne.

From Portland, head to San Francisco via Highway 101 South. This drive takes around 10 hours with no stops. We recommend making stops in Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Mendocino for some breathtaking views of nature along the way.

Stop 1: Humboldt Redwoods State Park

This park is home to some of the tallest trees in the world and offers hiking trails for all skill levels. Take a break from driving and enjoy a peaceful walk among these towering giants.

Stop 2: Mendocino

This charming coastal town is known for its stunning cliffs and beaches. Spend an afternoon here exploring the headlands state park or relaxing on one of its many beaches.

Once you arrive in San Francisco, spend at least two days exploring this iconic city’s landmarks such as Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and Fisherman’s Wharf.

Final Destination: Los Angeles, California

After San Francisco, continue your journey south on Highway 1 towards Los Angeles. This drive offers some of the most scenic views of California’s coastline but can take up to nine hours with no stops.

Stop 3: Santa Cruz

This beach town is known for its amusement park and boardwalk, perfect for a fun-filled afternoon.

Stop 4: Santa Barbara

This coastal city is famous for its Spanish-style architecture and beautiful beaches. Take a stroll along the waterfront or explore the city’s numerous art galleries.

Finally, arrive in Los Angeles and spend at least two days exploring its famous attractions like Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, and Beverly Hills.

Total Time:

Overall, this itinerary takes approximately 10-14 days depending on how long you decide to stay in each city. It’s important to remember to take breaks from driving and enjoy the scenic views along the way. With proper planning and preparation, a West Coast road trip can be an unforgettable experience!
