By Alice Nichols

The Bone Church in Prague, also known as the Sedlec Ossuary, is a unique attraction that draws visitors from all around the world. The church is located in the small town of Kutná Hora, just a short train ride from Prague. It is famous for its macabre decorations made entirely out of human bones.

History of the Bone Church

The history of the Sedlec Ossuary dates back to the 13th century when an abbot from the Sedlec Monastery brought soil back from Jerusalem and sprinkled it over the cemetery. This made it a popular burial site and by the 14th century, there were tens of thousands of graves in the cemetery.

The Black Death

In 1318, an outbreak of the Black Death killed thousands of people in Kutná Hora. This led to even more burials in the cemetery and it soon became overcrowded. In the 15th century, a Gothic church was built on the site which was later expanded in the Baroque style.

The Bone Decorations

In 1870, František Rint was hired to put together all of the bones that had accumulated over time. He took this task very seriously and created a number of intricate bone decorations that can still be seen today.

  • Bone Chandelier: This impressive chandelier is made up of every bone in the human body.
  • Bone Pyramids: Four pyramids are located at each corner of the chapel.
  • Bone Coat-of-Arms: A coat-of-arms made entirely out of bones hangs on one wall.

How Old Is It?

The current structure dates back to 1400 when a Gothic church was built on the site. The Sedlec Ossuary itself is believed to have been created in the 16th century.

Restoration

The Sedlec Ossuary has gone through several restorations over the years. In 2016, a major renovation was completed which included a new lighting system and improved ventilation.
