Are you planning a trip to Madrid, Spain and wondering if you’ll be able to use ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft? Well, the answer is both yes and no.
Uber in Madrid:
In 2014, Uber launched its services in Madrid but faced fierce opposition from taxi drivers who felt threatened by the competition. As a result, in 2015, the Spanish government passed legislation that essentially banned Uber from operating in the city.
However, in March of 2021, Uber announced that it was returning to Madrid after being granted a license to operate as a private-hire vehicle service. So yes, you can now use Uber in Madrid!
Lyft in Madrid:
Lyft has not yet launched its services in Madrid or anywhere else outside of the United States and Canada. So unfortunately, you won’t be able to use Lyft during your visit to Madrid.
Other Ride-Sharing Services:
While Uber may be the only ride-sharing service available in Madrid at present, there are other options for getting around the city. One such option is Cabify, a popular ride-hailing app that operates throughout Spain and several other Latin American countries. Cabify works similarly to Uber and offers several different types of rides including standard cars, executive cars, and shared rides.
Using Ride-Sharing Services In Madrid
If you do decide to use ride-sharing services while visiting Madrid, keep in mind that they may not always be the most cost-effective option. Taxi fares are generally quite affordable compared to other major European cities such as London or Paris. Additionally, public transportation options such as buses and trains are readily available and can be a great way to explore the city on a budget.
Tipping Your Driver
Unlike in some other countries where tipping your driver is customary, it’s not expected or required when using ride-sharing services in Madrid. However, if you feel that your driver went above and beyond to make your trip enjoyable, you’re certainly welcome to leave a small tip as a gesture of appreciation.
- Uber: Currently available in Madrid
- Lyft: Not yet available in Madrid
- Cabify: A popular ride-hailing app in Spain and Latin America
The Bottom Line
While Lyft isn’t yet available in Madrid, you can still use Uber or other ride-hailing apps such as Cabify to get around the city. Keep in mind that other transportation options such as taxis and public transportation may also be worth considering depending on your budget and itinerary.
And lastly, while tipping isn’t expected when using ride-sharing services in Madrid, leaving a small tip as a token of appreciation is always appreciated. Have a great trip!
