How Much Did Barcelona Buy Malcom?

By Anna Duncan

Barcelona is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, with a long history of acquiring some of the best talents in the sport. One such player is Malcom Filipe Silva de Oliveira, commonly known as Malcom. The Brazilian winger joined Barcelona in 2018 from French club Bordeaux, but how much did Barcelona buy Malcom for?

According to reports, Barcelona paid €41 million to acquire Malcom’s services from Bordeaux. This was a significant amount of money for the then-21-year-old winger, who had only spent one season in Ligue 1.

The transfer fee was considered surprising by many football pundits and fans alike because it seemed like Malcom was on his way to AS Roma. The Italian club had even announced that they had reached an agreement with Bordeaux for the transfer of Malcom, but Barcelona swooped in at the last minute and hijacked the deal.

Barcelona’s decision to sign Malcom was seen as a statement of intent, as they were looking to bolster their attacking options following the departure of Neymar Jr. to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Malcom had shown glimpses of his potential during his time at Bordeaux, where he scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 35 appearances. He was also named Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

However, things did not go according to plan for Malcom at Barcelona. He struggled for game time under then-manager Ernesto Valverde and made only 24 appearances across all competitions in his debut season.

Malcom eventually moved on from Barcelona after just one season and joined Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg for a reported fee of €40 million.

In conclusion, Barcelona paid €41 million to sign Malcom from Bordeaux in 2018. While it was a significant investment at the time, it did not pay off as expected due to Malcom’s lack of game time at the club.
