Is Backpacking a Job?

By Anna Duncan

Backpacking has been around for centuries, as a form of exploration and discovery. It has become increasingly popular in recent years, with the rise of budget airlines and budget accommodation options. But is backpacking really a job?

When we think of backpacking, we often think of travelling around the world without any real plan or purpose. We picture someone who is just looking to explore different cultures, meet new people and have an adventure. Backpackers do tend to have some sort of itinerary in mind – for example, they may plan to visit certain cities or countries – but this isn’t necessarily driven by money-making motives.

However, there are people who do backpacking as a form of work. These are typically digital nomads who travel the world while working remotely.

This could involve blogging, web design or freelance writing, for example. These individuals may also take on short-term jobs such as teaching English or working at hostels in order to supplement their income.

The majority of backpackers may not be doing it as a job per se, but it can be seen as a form of work in its own right. Travelling can be exhausting and stressful at times and even though you’re not technically ‘working’ all the time, you are still putting in effort and energy towards your journey. You’re learning about different cultures and gaining experiences that you wouldn’t have had if you’d stayed at home.

Backpacking can also open up other opportunities such as networking with other travellers which could lead to finding employment abroad or even starting your own business. There are many success stories from backpackers who have made money from their travels by selling photos online or writing books about their experiences.

Conclusion:

So is backpacking a job? The answer is yes and no depending on how you look at it. For some people it will be a way to make money while exploring the world; for others it will simply be an adventure that teaches them more about themselves and other cultures.
