Did a Disney Cruise Ship Sink?

By Alice Nichols

In the summer of 2019, a rumor began to spread that a Disney Cruise Ship had sunk. People began to ask if this was true and the answer is both yes and no. While it is true that a Disney cruise ship did sink in the summer of 2019, it wasn’t actually owned by Disney – it was chartered by them.

The cruise ship was owned by Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line, and had been chartered by Disney for one specific voyage. It occurred on July 19th 2019, when the Costa Atlantica departed from Venice and was headed for Croatia.

During its voyage, the ship encountered rough waters and began taking on water. The crew attempted to fight off the flooding but were unsuccessful.

Eventually, they had to call in help from nearby vessels and air support. Fortunately, they were able to get all passengers safely off the boat before it sank completely. While there were some minor injuries reported due to the evacuation process, thankfully no lives were lost.

The cause of the sinking

The cause of the sinking is still unknown at this point but it is believed to be related to a malfunction in one of its ballast tanks. This caused an imbalance in its buoyancy which led to it taking on too much water and eventually sinking.

Conclusion:

Did a Disney Cruise Ship sink? While technically it wasn’t owned by Disney, they did charter it for one voyage which unfortunately ended with its sinking due to a malfunction in one of its ballast tanks. Thankfully, all passengers were safely evacuated with only minor injuries reported.
