R-value backpacking is an increasingly popular way to save weight and increase comfort while out on the trail. R-value, short for resistance value, is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat flow.

The higher the R-value, the better it insulates from outside temperatures. This is especially important when it comes to backpacking, as temperatures can vary greatly between day and night in many areas.

When selecting a sleeping pad for backpacking, look for one with a good R-value rating. Generally speaking, the higher the R-value, the more insulation you will have from cold temperatures. The standard range for sleeping pads is usually between 1 and 5.5 R-values; anything over 5.5 is considered exceptional and will provide excellent insulation even in extreme cold conditions.

When selecting a sleeping bag for backpacking, look for one with an R-value rating as well. As with sleeping pads, the higher the R-value rating, the more insulation you will have from cold temperatures. Many sleeping bags nowadays come with an integrated pad that can provide additional insulation; these are often referred to as “mummy” bags due to their close fit around the body.

The right combination of sleeping pad and sleeping bag can make all the difference when it comes to staying warm in colder climates while out on the trail.
