Can You Dehydrate Cheese for Backpacking?

By Robert Palmer

Cheese is a great addition to any backpacking meal. It is high in protein, can help keep you full for longer, and is delicious.

But it can be difficult to take cheese with you on a backpacking trip, as it needs to be kept cool and doesn’t last long. One solution for taking cheese on a backpacking trip is to dehydrate it.

Dehydrating cheese is actually quite simple. All you need is some cheese, a dehydrator (or an oven), and some parchment paper.

Start by slicing the cheese into thin slices or cubes – this will help the dehydration process go more quickly. Place the cheese slices or cubes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and put them in the dehydrator or oven set to 145°F (63°C). Dehydration time will vary depending on the thickness of the slices and type of cheese – hard cheeses like cheddar will take longer than soft cheeses like mozzarella.

Once the cheese has been completely dehydrated (it should look dry and brittle), remove it from the oven or dehydrator and allow it to cool completely before storing in an airtight container or zip-top bag. Dehydrated cheese will last up to 6 months if stored properly.

When you’re ready to use your dried cheese, just add a few tablespoons of water or your favorite broth and let sit for about 10 minutes until rehydrated. The rehydrated cheese can then be added to sandwiches, salads, soups, pastas – whatever you’d like!
