What Do You Need for Cold Weather Backpacking?

By Michael Ferguson

Cold weather backpacking can be a truly rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts. However, it does require some specialised gear in order to make the adventure enjoyable and safe. Here are the essential items you need for cold weather backpacking:

Clothing

  • A good set of base layers: These should be lightweight and breathable but also provide insulation from the cold. Merino wool is an ideal fabric choice.
  • A mid layer: This should offer warmth without adding too much bulk or weight.

Down jackets and synthetic insulated jackets are both good options.

  • An outer layer: This should be waterproof and windproof, ideally with taped seams to keep out any moisture. A hooded jacket is also a good idea.
  • Headgear: A warm hat that covers your ears is essential, as well as a balaclava or neck gaiter if you’re going to be in very cold conditions.
  • Gloves/mittens: Make sure these are waterproof and windproof, with enough insulation to keep your hands warm.
  • Socks: Merino wool socks are great for keeping feet warm and dry.

Shelter

  • A tent: A three-season tent will typically provide enough protection from the elements in milder conditions, but for colder temperatures you’ll need a four-season tent.
  • A sleeping bag: Look for one rated at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the coldest temperature you expect to encounter on your trip.
  • A sleeping pad/mattress: This will provide insulation from the cold ground and help keep you warm while sleeping. Inflatable pads are lightweight but closed-cell foam pads can offer more warmth.

Cooking & Eating Gear

  • Stove & fuel: Make sure you have enough fuel for your stove, as well as a windscreen if necessary to help conserve fuel in windy conditions.
  • Cooking pot & utensils: Bring along some basic cooking items such as a pot and some utensils for preparing meals on the trail.

Food & snacks : Plan ahead for meals and snacks that can easily be cooked and eaten on the trail . Pack plenty of high – energy foods such as nuts , dried fruit , granola bars , etc .
