Are There Two London Bridges?

By Michael Ferguson

This is a common question that arises when people visit London.

The answer is yes! There are actually two bridges in London that are referred to as London Bridge.

The Original London Bridge

The first bridge, known as the Original London Bridge, was built by the Romans in AD 50. This bridge was made of wood and was rebuilt several times over the centuries due to damage from fires and other natural disasters. In the 12th century, a new stone bridge was constructed, which became synonymous with the name “London Bridge”.

The New London Bridge

In 1967, it was decided that the Old London Bridge had become too weak to support modern traffic and it was sold to an American businessman named Robert P. McCulloch for $2.5 million dollars. The bridge was then dismantled and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

The current bridge that stands in its place is known as the New London Bridge. It was built between 1967 and 1972 and opened to traffic in 1973. This modern bridge is made of concrete and steel and has a unique design with multiple arches.

London Millennium Footbridge

Although not officially called “London Bridge,” another famous bridge in London is often mistaken for it. The London Millennium Footbridge spans across the River Thames between St Paul’s Cathedral on one side and Tate Modern on the other side.
