Can I Ski in Madrid?

By Robert Palmer

If you are planning a trip to Madrid during the winter months, you may be wondering if it is possible to go skiing. Madrid, being located in the heart of Spain, is not known for its snowy mountains like other popular ski destinations in Europe. However, that doesn’t mean that skiing is completely out of the question.

Sierra de Guadarrama

Sierra de Guadarrama is a mountain range located just an hour away from Madrid. It is known for its natural beauty and offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking and skiing. The range has two main ski resorts: Valdesqui and Navacerrada.

Valdesqui

Valdesqui is the larger of the two resorts and has 27 slopes with varying difficulties. The resort also offers snowboarding, sledging and snowshoeing activities. It is open from December to April.

Navacerrada

Navacerrada is smaller than Valdesqui but still offers 11 slopes for skiing and snowboarding. It also has a great kids area for beginners. Navacerrada is open from December to March.

How to Get There

Both resorts can be easily accessed by car or public transportation. If you choose to go by car, make sure to check weather conditions as the roads can get icy during winter months.

If you’re taking public transport, there are regular buses that leave from central Madrid to both resorts on weekends and holidays during the ski season.

What To Bring

If you plan on skiing or snowboarding, it’s important to bring warm clothing such as jackets, pants, gloves and hats. You should also bring sunscreen as the sun can be strong at higher altitudes even on cloudy days.

If you don’t have your own equipment, both resorts offer rental services for skis, snowboards and other equipment.

Conclusion

While Madrid may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of ski destinations, Sierra de Guadarrama offers a great opportunity for those looking to hit the slopes. With its picturesque mountains and easily accessible locations, it’s definitely worth adding to your winter travel plans.
