By Robert Palmer

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a castle, steeped in history and surrounded by tales of intrigue and mystery? Well, the Tower of London is one such castle that has captured the imagination of people for centuries.

But can you actually live in the Tower of London? Let’s find out.

What is the Tower of London?

The Tower of London is a historic fortress located in central London, England. It was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and has served many purposes over the years.

It has been a royal palace, a prison, an armory, and even a zoo. Today, it is primarily a tourist attraction and home to the Crown Jewels.

Can You Live in the Tower of London?

The short answer is no. The Tower of London is not currently available for residential use. However, it wasn’t always this way.

The Royal Menagerie

In the early 1200s, King John established a menagerie at the Tower of London which included exotic animals such as elephants and leopards. The keepers of these animals were allowed to live within the castle walls.

The Yeoman Warders

Today, there are still people who live within the Tower walls – but they are not residents in the traditional sense. The Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, are ceremonial guards who protect the Tower and its treasures.

They also give tours to visitors. The Yeoman Warders and their families are provided with housing within the grounds.

The Constable’s Lodgings

There are also lodgings within the tower that have been used by high-ranking officials throughout history. The Constable’s Lodgings were built in 1235 for Peter de Rosa who was appointed as Constable of the Tower. The lodgings have been used by various Constables since then, including the current Constable, General Sir Nicholas Carter.

Conclusion

While you can’t live in the Tower of London as a regular resident, there are still ways to be a part of its history and lore. Whether you’re a Yeoman Warder or a high-ranking official, living within the castle walls is reserved for only a select few. However, with its stunning architecture and rich history, visiting the Tower of London is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.
