Can You Travel on an ESTA for Business?

By Michael Ferguson

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization, and it is the system the US government uses to authorize travel to the United States from foreign countries. The ESTA program was introduced in 2009, and since then it has become an invaluable tool for travelers from all over the world looking to visit or transit through the US. The ESTA application process is simple, efficient and secure, and successful applicants receive a digital authorization via email which allows them entry into the country.

Traveling to the US for business purposes is a common occurrence for many entrepreneurs and businesspeople alike. In order to do so, you must possess a valid ESTA authorization in addition to any other visa or travel documents that may be required.

An ESTA authorization allows travelers to enter the US for up to 90 days at a time with either business or tourism purposes in mind. However, travelers should be aware that they cannot engage in any form of employment while in the country on an ESTA authorization.

When completing an ESTA application, applicants have three options regarding their purpose of travel: tourism/visiting friends or family, medical/business reasons or transit purposes. Those who are traveling for business reasons should select ‘medical/business’ when prompted and will be asked to provide further details about their trip such as planned activities, places of stay etc. If successful, these applicants will receive their authorizations within 72 hours via email.

In conclusion, it is possible to travel on an ESTA for business purposes provided you meet all of the requirements set out by US immigration officials. Completing your application correctly and providing accurate information is essential if you wish to ensure your application is successful – failure to do this could result in being denied entry into the country upon arrival at a port of entry.
