Do and Don’ts in Barcelona?

By Alice Nichols

If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona, there are some important do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. This vibrant city is full of culture, history, and excitement, but it also has its own unique quirks and customs that visitors should be aware of. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your time in Barcelona while avoiding any potential faux pas.

Do’s:

1. Do try the local cuisine

Barcelona is known for its delicious food, so be sure to indulge in some traditional dishes like paella, patatas bravas, and churros con chocolate. You can find these dishes at restaurants throughout the city, but be sure to check out popular food markets like La Boqueria for a truly authentic experience.

2. Do explore the city by foot

Barcelona is a very walkable city with plenty of pedestrian-friendly streets and neighborhoods. Walking is a great way to discover hidden gems and get a sense of the local culture.

3. Do visit Gaudi’s architectural wonders

Antoni Gaudi was a famous architect who left his mark on Barcelona with his unique style that blends nature-inspired elements with modernist design. Some must-visit attractions include Park Guell, Casa Batllo, and La Sagrada Familia.

4. Do learn some basic Spanish

While many locals in Barcelona speak English or other languages, it’s always helpful to know some basic Spanish phrases as a sign of respect for the local culture.

  • Do say: Hola (hello), Por favor (please), Gracias (thank you)
  • Don’t say: No hablo español (I don’t speak Spanish) – this can come across as rude.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t wear beachwear in the city

While Barcelona is a coastal city, it’s important to dress appropriately when exploring the urban areas. Avoid wearing bathing suits or other beachwear outside of the beach and pool areas. Don’t forget to validate your metro ticket

If you plan on using public transportation in Barcelona, be sure to validate your metro ticket before boarding. Failure to do so can result in a fine. Don’t expect dinner before 9 pm

In Spain, dinner is typically eaten later in the evening, often starting around 9 pm or later. Keep this in mind when making dinner plans. Don’t leave your belongings unattended

As with any major tourist destination, there is always a risk of theft or pickpocketing. Be sure to keep an eye on your belongings at all times and avoid leaving them unattended.

Now that you know some of the do’s and don’ts of Barcelona, you’re ready for an unforgettable trip to this beautiful city!
