Does the United Nations Have a Vacation Department?

By Anna Duncan

The United Nations (UN) is a global organization that promotes international cooperation and aims to solve problems related to human rights, development, peace, and security. The UN has several departments that work towards these goals, but does it have a vacation department? Let’s find out.

What is the UN?

The United Nations was established in 1945 after World War II to prevent another such conflict. It has 193 member states and its headquarters is located in New York City. The UN has six main organs – the General Assembly, the Security Council, the International Court of Justice, the Secretariat, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Trusteeship Council.

Does the UN have a vacation department?

No, the UN does not have a vacation department as such. However, it does offer staff members certain types of leave that can be used for vacations. The types of leave include annual leave, home leave, and special leave.

Annual Leave

All staff members are entitled to annual leave which is accrued based on their years of service. For example:

– Staff members with less than five years of service are entitled to 2.5 days of annual leave for each month worked.
– Staff members with five or more years of service are entitled to three days of annual leave for each month worked.

This means that a staff member with 10 years of service would be entitled to 30 days (or six weeks) of annual leave per year.

Home Leave

Staff members who serve outside their home country for a certain period are entitled to home leave which can be used for vacations or other personal reasons. Home leave is granted as follows:

– Staff members with less than five years of service are entitled to one round-trip ticket per year for themselves and their eligible dependents.
– Staff members with five or more years of service are entitled to one round-trip ticket per year for themselves and their eligible dependents, plus an additional ticket every two years.

Special Leave

Staff members may also be granted special leave for various reasons, including personal emergencies, family obligations, and medical appointments.

In Conclusion

While the UN does not have a vacation department, it does offer staff members various types of leave that can be used for vacations or personal reasons. The UN recognizes the importance of work-life balance and encourages its staff to take time off to recharge and spend time with their loved ones.
