Has a Cruise Ship Ever Hit a Tidal Wave?

By Alice Nichols

Cruise ships are often seen as glamorous, luxurious vessels, with their ability to take passengers around the world in comfort and style. But this doesn’t mean they have never encountered any disasters along the way.

In fact, it is possible for a cruise ship to hit a tidal wave.

Tidal waves are caused by large storms and can reach heights of up to 100 feet or more. They can be extremely powerful and cause major destruction when they hit land or sea. Cruise ships are not immune to these forces of nature either – they have been known to encounter tidal waves while out at sea.

In 2013, the cruise ship Costa Allegra encountered a severe storm while sailing off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean. The storm caused massive waves that reached up to 30 feet in height and flooded parts of the ship’s deck. Fortunately, no one was injured but it was still a dangerous experience for those onboard.

In 2015, another cruise ship – Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas – experienced a similar situation when it sailed into a powerful storm off the coast of New Jersey. The ship was hit by gusts of wind as high as 105 mph and endured huge waves that reached up to 11 feet in height.

Conclusion:

Though such incidents are rare, it is possible for a cruise ship to encounter a tidal wave while at sea and cause considerable damage. Fortunately, this type of incident is usually rare and most ships have safety protocols in place should they ever experience such an event.
