Has Anyone Survived Jumping Off a Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

Jumping off a cruise ship is considered an incredibly reckless and dangerous stunt, and is not recommended by anyone. But has anyone survived such an attempt?

The answer to this question is yes, but it is incredibly rare. Despite the dangers, there are cases in which a person has jumped off a cruise ship and lived to tell the tale.

One of the most notable cases of someone surviving jumping off a cruise ship is that of Mark Bruder. In 2018, Bruder decided to jump off a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel as it was departing from Miami.

Fortunately for Bruder, he managed to swim back to shore despite the cold temperatures and strong currents in the ocean. He was later found by Coast Guard officials who had been searching for him since he had gone overboard.

Another case of someone surviving jumping off a cruise ship is that of an unnamed woman in 2013. This woman jumped off the side of a Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines vessel while it was sailing near Mexico. She miraculously managed to swim all the way back to shore despite being in open waters for hours and enduring cold temperatures.

Conclusion:

While it is highly unlikely that anyone would survive jumping off a cruise ship due to the dangers involved, there have been two cases in which people have managed to do so against all odds. In both cases, luck was on their side as they were able to swim back safely against all odds.
