How Did Paris Get the Golden Apple?

By Anna Duncan

Once upon a time, in Ancient Greek mythology, there was a wedding that took place on the top of Mount Olympus. This wasn’t just any wedding, it was the wedding of two of the most powerful gods – Peleus and Thetis.

All the gods and goddesses were invited to the grand celebration, except for one. Eris – the goddess of discord.

Eris was furious that she wasn’t invited to the wedding. So, she decided to take revenge by causing chaos and confusion at the party. She arrived at the celebration with a golden apple with the words ‘For The Fairest’ inscribed on it.

As soon as she entered, all eyes turned to her and her golden apple. The three most beautiful goddesses – Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite – immediately began fighting over who deserved the golden apple.

The argument between them went on for hours until Zeus, king of all gods intervened. He proposed that they ask a mortal human to decide who deserved the golden apple.

The three goddesses agreed and chose Paris – a Trojan prince known for his beauty and charm. Each goddess tried to bribe Paris with their respective gifts.

Firstly, Athena offered him wisdom and victory in battle if he chose her. Next up was Hera who promised him power if he chose her. But it was Aphrodite’s offer that won Paris over – she promised him love from the most beautiful woman in all of Greece.

Paris handed over the golden apple to Aphrodite, declaring her as ‘the fairest’ of them all. Little did he know that his decision would lead him down a path of destruction and ultimately result in one of history’s most legendary wars – The Trojan War.

In conclusion, Eris’s desire for revenge led to a chain reaction that resulted in Paris choosing Aphrodite as ‘the fairest.’ This seemingly innocent decision had far-reaching consequences that changed history forever. The story highlights the power of beauty and the consequences of making hasty decisions.
