How Do I Plan a Road Trip to Iceland?

By Robert Palmer

If you’re looking for a unique and adventurous vacation destination, Iceland should definitely be on your list. The Nordic island nation is known for its stunning natural beauty, including glaciers, hot springs, and volcanoes.

But before you start packing your bags, it’s important to plan ahead so you can make the most of your trip. Here are some tips on how to plan a road trip to Iceland.

When to Visit:
The best time to visit Iceland depends on what you want to see and do. If you’re interested in seeing the Northern Lights, the best time to visit is from September to mid-April. If you prefer warmer weather and longer days, plan your trip between May and August.

Getting There:
Most visitors arrive in Iceland by flying into Keflavik International Airport near Reykjavik. From there, renting a car is the best way to explore the country at your own pace. Be sure to book your rental car ahead of time as they can be in high demand during peak travel season.

Planning Your Itinerary:
Iceland is a relatively small country with only one major highway that circles the entire island called the “Ring Road” or Route 1. A typical road trip around the Ring Road takes about 7-10 days depending on how much time you want to spend at each stop.

Day 1: Reykjavik

Start your trip by exploring Iceland’s capital and largest city, Reykjavik. Visit landmarks like Hallgrimskirkja Church or take a dip in one of the city’s many geothermal pools.

Day 2-3: Golden Circle

Drive east from Reykjavik along the Golden Circle which includes Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area, and Thingvellir National Park.

Day 4-5: South Coast

Drive along the south coast to see black sand beaches, waterfalls, and glaciers. Highlights include Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara Beach, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Day 6-7: East Fjords

Explore the scenic fjords of eastern Iceland, including Seydisfjordur and Borgarfjordur Eystri.

Day 8-9: North Iceland

Head north to see highlights such as Akureyri, Husavik for whale watching tours, and Lake Myvatn for geothermal activity.

Day 10: Reykjavik

Return to Reykjavik for your last day in Iceland. Use this day to explore any parts of the city you may have missed earlier in your trip.

What to Pack:
Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable so be sure to pack for all types of weather including a warm jacket, waterproof boots, and layers. Don’t forget your camera to capture the stunning landscapes!

  • Warm Jacket
  • Waterproof Boots
  • Layers (long-sleeve shirts, sweaters)
  • Hat and Gloves
  • Sunscreen (even in winter)
  • Camera and extra memory cards/batteries

Final Tips:
Before embarking on your road trip around Iceland, make sure you have a valid driver’s license and car insurance. Be aware that gas stations can be few and far between so fill up whenever you get the chance. Lastly, always check weather conditions before setting out on any long drives as road closures due to snow or other hazardous conditions are not uncommon in Iceland.

With careful planning and preparation, a road trip around Iceland can be an unforgettable adventure. Happy travels!
