How Do You Pack Human Waste Backpacking?

By Alice Nichols

Backpacking is an excellent way to explore the outdoors, but it also comes with certain responsibilities. One of those is the disposal of human waste.

The proper way to do this is an important consideration for both the environment and fellow backpackers.

The first step in packing human waste while backpacking is to identify a suitable place to dispose of it. This should be a spot that has at least 200 feet of distance from any water sources such as rivers, lakes, or streams.

It’s also best to choose a spot that’s not visible from trails or campsites and that will not be disturbed by animals.

Once you’ve identified a spot, you’ll need to make sure you have the right supplies. First and foremost, you’ll need some type of biodegradable bag such as a WAG bag or other similar product. These bags are designed specifically for carrying human waste and break down over time without leaving behind any trace in nature.

Next, you’ll need a trowel for digging your cathole. This should be about 8-12 inches deep and wide enough for all your waste material plus some additional soil with which to cover it up when done. Finally, bring along some hand sanitizer or wipes so you can clean up afterwards.

Once everything is ready:

  • Take off your shoes and socks.
  • Open the biodegradable bag and place it inside the hole.
  • Go about your business in the bag.
  • When finished, cover up the waste with soil using your trowel.

It’s important to note that it may take several months for the waste material to fully decompose so don’t forget where you buried it! Also make sure any toilet paper used is buried as well since it can take up to two years before it breaks down naturally.

Conclusion:

Packing human waste while backpacking requires planning ahead and having the right supplies on hand. By identifying a suitable area in advance and bringing along biodegradable bags, trowels, and hand sanitizer, you can ensure that your human waste is disposed of properly while out on the trail.
