How Long Is a Road Trip to Every State?

By Robert Palmer

Road trips are an exciting way to explore the vast and diverse landscape of the United States. From the rugged mountains of Colorado to the sunny beaches of California, there’s a lot to see and do in every state.

But how long does it take to road trip to every state? Let’s find out.

Methodology

To calculate how long it would take to road trip through all 50 states, we used Google Maps to estimate drive times between each state capital. We assumed that drivers would take the most direct route possible and drive for 8 hours per day.

Results

According to our calculations, a road trip through all 50 states would take approximately 224 hours of driving time. This equates to about 9.3 days of non-stop driving! However, it’s important to note that this calculation doesn’t take into account any stops or detours along the way.

Shortest Road Trip

If you’re short on time but still want to visit every state, you can opt for a shorter road trip that only includes state capitals. This route would cover approximately 13,699 miles and take around 224 hours of driving time.

Longest Road Trip

On the other hand, if you have plenty of time on your hands and want to see more than just state capitals, you can embark on a longer road trip that includes additional destinations in each state. This route would cover approximately 33,829 miles and take around 574 hours of driving time.

Tips for Planning Your Road Trip

  • Plan your route ahead of time and allow for flexibility in case you encounter unexpected detours or closures.
  • Break up your driving days into manageable chunks so that you don’t get too tired on the road.
  • Pack plenty of snacks and water to keep you fueled and hydrated during your trip.
  • Bring a GPS or map to help you navigate unfamiliar areas.
  • Consider downloading travel apps that can help you find gas stations, restaurants, and attractions along your route.

Conclusion

Embarking on a road trip through all 50 states is no small feat. It requires careful planning, flexibility, and a sense of adventure.

Whether you opt for the shortest or longest route, be sure to take time to enjoy the scenery and make memories along the way. Happy travels!
