By Michael Ferguson

Mariano Diaz, also known as Mariano, is a Spanish professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for Real Madrid. He was born on August 1, 1993, in Premià de Mar, Spain. Mariano began his football career in the youth academy of Espanyol before moving to Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2011.

In 2016, Mariano moved to French club Olympique Lyonnais for a transfer fee of €8 million. He played two seasons for Lyon, scoring 21 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions.

After impressing during his stint at Lyon, Real Madrid exercised their buy-back option and brought Mariano back to the club in August 2018. The buy-back clause allowed Real Madrid to re-sign Mariano for €22 million.

Mariano made his second debut for Los Blancos on September 1, 2018, in a La Liga match against Leganés. He scored his first goal for the club just a week later against Roma in the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid’s decision to sign Mariano was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. Some lauded the move and believed that he had the potential to become a top striker for the club. Others were skeptical and felt that Real Madrid overpaid for him.

Regardless of what people thought about the transfer fee at the time, it’s fair to say that Mariano has shown glimpses of his quality since returning to Real Madrid. Though he has mainly been used as a backup striker behind Karim Benzema, he has still managed to score important goals when called upon.

In conclusion, Real Madrid bought Mariano Diaz back from Olympique Lyonnais for a transfer fee of €22 million. While some may have felt that this was an overpayment at the time of the signing, Mariano has since shown that he can be a valuable asset for the club. With his potential and talent, it will be interesting to see how he continues to develop in his future seasons with Real Madrid.
