How Much of Hawaii’s Economy Is Based on Tourism?

By Robert Palmer

Hawaii, a tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean, is known for its stunning beaches, lush greenery, and unique culture. It’s no surprise that tourism plays a significant role in the state’s economy. In fact, the tourism industry is Hawaii’s largest industry and one of the main drivers of its economy.

The Importance of Tourism in Hawaii

Tourism accounts for a significant portion of Hawaii’s economy. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), in 2019, tourism generated approximately $17.75 billion in visitor spending and supported more than 200,000 jobs across the state. This shows just how important the industry is to Hawaii’s economic well-being.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Hawaiian Tourism

However, with the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, tourist activity has come to a screeching halt. The pandemic has adversely affected not only Hawaii but also other popular tourist destinations around the world. The HTA reported that between March and June 2020 alone, visitor arrivals decreased by almost 100% compared to the same period in 2019.

As a result of these circumstances, many businesses that rely on tourism are struggling to stay afloat. Hotels and airlines have been hit hard as people are canceling their travel plans due to health concerns and travel restrictions.

Efforts to Rebuild Hawaiian Tourism

In an effort to revive tourism in Hawaii while keeping visitors safe during the pandemic, strict measures have been put into place. For instance, all travelers visiting Hawaii are required to get tested for COVID-19 before their arrival or quarantine themselves for 14 days upon arrival.

The HTA is also working with local businesses and organizations to promote domestic tourism within Hawaii. This includes encouraging residents from other islands to travel within their own state as well as promoting staycations for locals who live on Oahu.

Conclusion

In conclusion, tourism is a vital industry for Hawaii’s economy. It has contributed significantly to the state’s growth and development over the years, but the current pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges. Nevertheless, with the right measures in place, Hawaii’s tourism industry can bounce back and continue to be a driving force of the state’s economy.
