How Was Rome Founded: The Real Story?

Rome, the eternal city, is known for its rich history and magnificent architecture. But have you ever wondered how this grand city came into existence?

Let’s dive into the real story of how Rome was founded.

The Legend of Romulus and Remus

According to Roman mythology, Rome was founded by twin brothers, Romulus and Remus. Their story begins with their birth to Rhea Silvia, a vestal virgin and daughter of Numitor, the rightful king of Alba Longa.

However, their birth was not without controversy. Their uncle Amulius usurped the throne and ordered their mother to be imprisoned.

Fearing that the twins would grow up to challenge his rule, Amulius ordered a servant to dispose of them.

Fortunately for the twins, they were found by a she-wolf who nursed and protected them until they were discovered by a shepherd named Faustulus. Faustulus took them in and raised them as his own sons.

The Rise of Romulus

As they grew older, Romulus and Remus became natural leaders among their peers. They gathered a band of loyal followers and set out to establish their own city near the Tiber River.

However, conflict arose between the brothers over where to build their city. Legend has it that they consulted the gods through augury – interpreting divine will through observing bird patterns.

Each brother chose a hill as his preferred location: Palatine Hill for Romulus and Aventine Hill for Remus.

The Founding of Rome

  • Legend has it that Remus mockingly leaped over Romulus’ half-constructed walls, taunting his brother’s progress.
  • Enraged by this act of defiance, Romulus killed Remus on the spot.
  • With Remus out of the picture, Romulus became the sole ruler and named the city after himself – Rome.

Rome’s foundation was laid on April 21, 753 BC. This momentous event marked the beginning of a city that would grow to become one of the greatest empires in history.

The Historical Perspective

While the legend of Romulus and Remus provides a captivating story, it is essential to examine Rome’s foundation from a historical perspective. Modern scholars believe that Rome was most likely established by various Italic tribes who settled in the area during the Iron Age.

These tribes gradually formed an alliance and created a settlement that eventually developed into Rome. The exact details of this process are still debated among historians, but it is widely accepted that Rome’s foundation was not solely attributed to mythical figures like Romulus and Remus.

The Legacy of Rome

Regardless of its origin story, there is no denying the lasting impact of Rome. From its republican government to its vast network of roads and aqueducts, Rome’s influence can be seen in modern society even today.

By understanding how Rome was founded – whether through mythology or historical interpretation – we gain insight into the remarkable journey that shaped one of the greatest civilizations in human history.
