By Alice Nichols

Cuba, the Caribbean island nation known for its rich history, culture, and natural beauty, has always been a popular tourist destination. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the country closed its borders to international travelers in March 2020. With the vaccine rollout underway and global travel restrictions easing up gradually, many people are wondering if Cuba is open for tourism now.

Current Situation

As of September 2021, Cuba has not yet fully reopened its borders to international tourists. The country is currently allowing only select categories of travelers to enter, including Cuban residents and citizens, foreign diplomats accredited in Cuba, foreign businessmen with authorization from Cuban authorities, and a few other special cases.

However, the Cuban government has announced plans to gradually reopen its tourism industry in a phased manner. The first phase began on July 1st when Varadero beach resort was opened exclusively for domestic tourists. In August 2021, a few more provinces were added to this list.

Requirements for Entry

For those who are allowed entry into Cuba at present times, there are certain requirements that need to be met. All travelers must complete a health declaration form and undergo a PCR test for COVID-19 upon arrival at the airport. Additionally, all visitors must have travel insurance that covers medical expenses related to COVID-19.

When Will Cuba Reopen Fully?

The exact timeline for when Cuba will reopen fully is unclear as it depends on various factors such as vaccination rates in the country and the prevalence of COVID-19 cases globally. However, it is expected that once tourism reopens fully in Cuba, it will be done so in a phased manner with strict health protocols in place.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while Cuba has not yet fully reopened its borders for international tourists at present times due to COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions; however gradual reopening is in progress. It is important to keep an eye on the situation and follow official guidelines before planning a trip to Cuba. As soon as the country fully reopens, it will be a great opportunity for tourists to explore its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and rich history once again.
