Is Fuji Open for Tourism?

By Robert Palmer

As the world slowly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a growing interest in travel. If you’re planning to visit Japan, you might be wondering if Fuji is open for tourism. The good news is that Fuji is open for tourists, but there are some important things to keep in mind before you go.

Travel Restrictions

Before planning your trip to Fuji, it’s important to check the travel restrictions in place. Japan has implemented strict entry restrictions since March 2020 due to COVID-19. However, as of July 2021, Japan has lifted its state of emergency and has started allowing foreign visitors back into the country.

Countries with Restrictions

Japan has designated certain countries as “restricted areas,” and travelers coming from those countries are subject to additional quarantine measures. As of July 2021, the list of restricted countries includes India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and Afghanistan.

Visa Requirements

If you’re planning a short-term visit (up to 90 days) for tourism purposes only and are a citizen of one of the 68 countries that have a visa exemption agreement with Japan, then you don’t need a visa. However, if your country is not on this list or if you plan to stay more than 90 days, then you need a visa.

COVID-19 Testing and Quarantine Requirements

All travelers entering Japan are required to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours before their departure time for Japan. Additionally, upon arrival in Japan all travelers must undergo another COVID-19 test at their own expense (approximately ¥30,000). Travelers must also follow quarantine requirements depending on their itinerary and vaccination status.

Tourist Attractions Open for Visitors

Most tourist attractions in Fuji have reopened for visitors, but they may have certain restrictions in place. For example, the Fuji Five Lakes and Mount Fuji are open, but there may be limited access to certain areas due to COVID-19 safety measures.

Accommodations

Accommodations such as hotels and guesthouses are open for visitors but are required to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures. It’s recommended to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak season.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Fuji is open for tourism but with some restrictions due to COVID-19. Travelers should check the latest travel restrictions and guidelines before planning their trip. With proper planning and precautions, you can still enjoy all that Fuji has to offer while staying safe and healthy.
