Is It Possible for Barcelona B to Get Promoted?

By Anna Duncan

Barcelona B, the reserve team of FC Barcelona, has been a breeding ground for young talent for many years. The team participates in the Spanish Segunda Division B, which is the third tier of Spanish football. As a reserve team, they cannot be promoted to La Liga, but is it possible for them to be promoted to the Segunda Division?

The short answer is yes, it’s possible. However, there are some conditions that need to be met for Barcelona B to achieve promotion.

Firstly, it’s important to understand the structure of Spanish football. The top two tiers of Spanish football are La Liga and the Segunda Division.

Below that are four groups in the Segunda Division B. Each group contains 20 teams and Barcelona B currently plays in Group III.

To achieve promotion from Segunda Division B to Segunda Division, a team must finish in first place in their group or win a playoff tournament between the four group winners.

For Barcelona B to win their group and achieve automatic promotion, they must finish ahead of 19 other teams. This is no small feat as there are many talented teams in their group such as Villarreal B and Espanyol B.

If Barcelona B finishes second or third in their group, they will have an opportunity to compete in the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two rounds with each round being played on a home and away basis. The winner of each playoff round advances until there is only one team left standing who earns promotion.

In recent years, Barcelona B has come close to achieving promotion via the playoffs but has fallen short each time. In 2017-18 they lost in the semifinals while in 2018-19 they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Despite these setbacks, Barcelona B remains one of the strongest teams in their division and continues to produce talented young players such as Ansu Fati and Pedri who have since gone on to play for the first team.

In conclusion, while Barcelona B cannot be promoted to La Liga, they can achieve promotion to the Segunda Division by winning their group or through the playoffs. It’s a difficult task, but with their top-class facilities and talented players, it’s certainly not out of reach.
