By Anna Duncan

Spain is a beautiful country located in southwestern Europe. It is known for its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning architecture.

One of the most popular cities in Spain is Madrid, which is often mistaken as a country itself. But the question remains – Is Madrid the only Spanish country in Europe?

The answer to this question is simple yet somewhat confusing. Madrid is not a country, but it is the capital city of Spain.

Spain is a sovereign state that occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. It shares borders with Portugal to the west, France and Andorra to the northeast, and Gibraltar and Morocco to the south.

Spain has 17 regions or autonomous communities, each with their own unique culture, traditions, and languages. These regions are Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Basque Country (or Euskadi), Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia (or Catalunya), Ceuta (an autonomous city), Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja , Madrid (the capital city), Melilla (an autonomous city), Murcia.

Each of these regions has its own government and parliament with varying degrees of autonomy granted by the Spanish Constitution. They also have their own distinctive landscape ranging from mountainous terrain to beautiful beaches.

Apart from these 17 regions within Spain’s mainland territory there are two more territories that are considered as Spanish territories in Europe: Ceuta and Melilla. These two cities are located on North Africa’s coast but they are part of Spain as they were acquired by Spain during the colonial era.

So to answer the question – No! Madrid is not the only Spanish country in Europe; instead it’s just one region among many other beautiful regions that make up this diverse European nation.

To sum up- Spain is one sovereign state consisting of several different autonomous communities/regions, with Madrid being one of them. Ceuta and Melilla are two Spanish territories in Europe that are located on North Africa’s coast.
