Is Paris Saint-Germain Out of Champions League?

By Alice Nichols

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been a powerhouse in French football for well over a decade. The club has won multiple domestic titles and has also made it to the finals of the UEFA Champions League. However, their luck seems to have run out this year as they face the possibility of an early exit from the competition.

PSG’s rocky start in Champions League 2021-22

The current Champions League campaign has not been kind to PSG. The team started off with a draw against Club Brugge, followed by a loss to Manchester City. They managed to bounce back with a win against RB Leipzig, but their most recent defeat at the hands of Manchester City has put them in a precarious position.

The group standings

As things currently stand, PSG is third in their group with 4 points from 4 games played. Manchester City leads the group with 10 points, followed by RB Leipzig with 6 points. Club Brugge is at the bottom of the table with just 1 point.

What needs to happen for PSG to qualify?

PSG’s fate in this season’s Champions League is not entirely out of their hands. If they manage to win both their remaining matches against RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, they will finish on 10 points – the same as RB Leipzig’s current tally.

However, even if PSG wins both their matches, they still need other results to go their way. If Manchester City defeats RB Leipzig in their next match, it will ensure that both Manchester City and RB Leipzig progress to the knockout stages regardless of any other results.

If PSG does manage to win both their remaining matches and Manchester City loses or draws against RB Leipzig, then PSG will progress along with Manchester City – assuming that they don’t suffer a heavy defeat against Club Brugge in their final match.

Conclusion

In conclusion, PSG’s fate in this season’s Champions League is still uncertain. While it is mathematically possible for them to qualify, they need other results to go their way.

Nonetheless, PSG has the quality and talent to turn things around and make a late push towards qualification. Only time will tell if they can do it.
