Is Philippines Reopening for Tourism?

By Robert Palmer

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the tourism industry globally, with many countries closing their borders to foreign visitors to contain the spread of the virus. However, with the rollout of vaccines worldwide, many countries are starting to reopen their borders for tourism. One such country is the Philippines.

Current Situation

As of writing this article, the Philippines is not yet fully open for tourism. However, starting from May 1st, 2021, the country has allowed foreigners with long-term visas to enter. This includes foreign spouses and children of Filipino citizens, holders of visas issued under Executive Order 226 or the Omnibus Investment Code of 1987, and holders of 47(a)(2) visas issued by the Philippine Department of Justice.

Requirements for Entry

Foreigners allowed to enter the Philippines must have a pre-booked accommodation for at least seven nights in an accredited quarantine hotel or facility while waiting for their test results. They also need to undergo a COVID-19 RT-PCR test on the sixth day after their arrival. If they test negative, they can continue their stay in their chosen accommodation or residence.

In addition, all passengers entering or transiting through Philippine airports are required to complete an online registration form and obtain a unique QR code. This can be done through www.tourism.gov.ph/ before departure.

Future Plans

The Philippine government has plans to further ease restrictions on international travel as long as protocols are followed and cases remain manageable. In fact, starting July 1st, 2021, vaccinated travelers from green countries will be allowed entry without quarantine requirements.

However, it’s important to remember that these plans are subject to change based on how well the vaccination campaign goes and how well cases are managed in the country.

The Bottom Line

While it’s not yet business as usual in the Philippines tourism industry, the country is taking steps to reopen its borders for foreign visitors. As of now, only foreigners with long-term visas are allowed to enter, but there are plans to further ease restrictions for vaccinated travelers. If you’re planning to travel to the Philippines in the near future, it’s recommended that you keep up-to-date with the latest travel advisories and protocols.
