Is Tahiti Accepting Cruise Ships?

By Michael Ferguson

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many travelers are eagerly waiting for the day when they can safely explore new destinations once again. For those who are dreaming of a tropical escape, Tahiti has long been a popular destination choice. However, with the pandemic still ongoing, many are left wondering: is Tahiti accepting cruise ships?

The answer to this question is not a straightforward one. While Tahiti has reopened its borders to international visitors, there are still some restrictions in place that may impact cruise ship arrivals.

Firstly, it’s worth noting that Tahiti has always had strict regulations when it comes to cruise ship arrivals. This is due in large part to concerns about preserving the natural beauty of the islands and ensuring sustainable tourism practices. Even before the pandemic, cruise ships were only allowed to dock at certain ports and there were limits on the number of passengers that could disembark at once.

Since the onset of COVID-19, these regulations have become even more stringent. In March 2020, Tahiti closed its borders to international visitors in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. It wasn’t until July 2020 that they began reopening their borders, but with strict protocols in place.

Currently, all travelers (including those arriving by cruise ship) must present proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days prior to departure. They must also complete an online health registration form and provide proof of travel insurance that includes coverage for COVID-19-related medical expenses.

In addition to these requirements, there are also limitations on which ports can accept cruise ships. As of July 2021, only two ports in Tahiti (Papeete and Bora Bora) are authorized to receive cruise ships.

It’s also worth noting that individual cruise lines may have their own protocols and requirements for passengers boarding their ships. Some may require proof of vaccination or additional testing beyond what is required by Tahiti’s government.

In summary, while Tahiti has reopened its borders and is currently accepting international visitors (including those arriving by cruise ship), there are still some restrictions in place. Travelers should be prepared to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, complete an online health registration form, and follow any additional protocols put in place by their cruise line.

Additionally, not all ports in Tahiti are able to accept cruise ships at this time. As always, it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest travel advisories and restrictions before planning any international travel.
