Was the Titanic Bigger Than a Modern Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

The Titanic was a luxurious passenger liner that infamously sunk in 1912, making it one of the most famous maritime disasters of all time. Despite its tragic end, the Titanic was a marvel of engineering at the time, and many people are still fascinated by this incredible vessel today. As with any large ship, one of the most common questions asked is: Was the Titanic bigger than a modern cruise ship?

The answer to this question is actually quite complex. In terms of physical size, the Titanic was 882 feet and 9 inches long—which is longer than most modern cruise ships.

The largest modern cruise ships are typically around 1,100 feet long (or even shorter). However, while the Titanic was certainly larger in terms of length, it was much narrower than modern cruise ships which typically measure between 118-135 feet wide.

In terms of gross tonnage (a measure of internal volume), the Titanic weighed in at an impressive 46,328 gross tons—significantly more than many modern cruise ships. The largest modern cruise ship (the Symphony of the Seas) weighs in at 228,081 gross tons—nearly five times larger than the Titanic!

When it comes to amenities and features, however, the Titanic pales in comparison to many modern cruise ships. While it featured luxuries such as a swimming pool and Turkish baths for first-class passengers, these amenities were nothing compared to what can be found on board today’s mega-cruise ships. Modern cruise ships feature everything from zip lines and rock climbing walls to ice skating rinks and miniature golf courses.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, while the Titanic may have been longer than many modern cruise ships in terms of physical size; its width was significantly smaller and its amenities could not match up to those found on board today’s mega-cruise ships. Ultimately, it can be said that while an impressive feat for its time – when compared to today’s vessels – the Titanic does not quite measure up.
