What Are the Major Departments on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships are huge vessels with a variety of departments and staff members who help to keep these complex machines running smoothly. On a typical large-scale cruise ship, there are many major departments responsible for the many different aspects of the cruise experience.

Deck Department: This department is responsible for all exterior areas of the ship, including the decks, swimming pools, promenades and other public areas. The Deck Department is also in charge of external maintenance like painting and repairs that need to be done while the ship is at sea.

Engineering Department: This department maintains all mechanical systems on board, such as propulsion systems, air conditioning, and electrical systems. They also manage all repairs and upgrades that need to be done while the ship is at sea.

Hotel/Housekeeping Department: This department manages all interior areas of the cruise ship including guest cabins, public areas such as restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as crew cabins.

Housekeeping staff are responsible for cleaning guest cabins and public spaces on board the ship.

Food & Beverage Department: This department manages all food and beverage services on board the ship including restaurants, bars and lounges. They are responsible for overseeing food preparation and service in all dining outlets on board.

Entertainment Department: This department is responsible for providing entertainment activities such as live music performances or stage shows throughout the voyage. They also manage any activities offered during port calls or on board excursions.
