What Are You Not Allowed to Take on a Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

When planning for a cruise, it’s important to know what items are and aren’t allowed on board. You don’t want to arrive at the port only to find that you can’t bring something essential or have to leave something behind. Even if you have a travel agent helping you with your booking, it’s best to double-check with the cruise line itself to make sure you know what items are and aren’t allowed.

Most cruise lines will not allow passengers to bring any type of illegal drugs on board. This includes marijuana and any type of controlled substances. In addition, many cruise lines do not allow passengers to bring weapons on board, such as firearms or knives. Fake weapons, such as foam swords or plastic guns, are also not allowed.

Alcoholic beverages are usually not allowed on board either.

Some cruise lines may allow passengers to bring one bottle of wine per person, but this is usually limited and must be checked in at the beginning of the cruise. Beer and hard liquor are generally prohibited.

Animals, with the exception of service animals, are not allowed on most cruises either. This includes cats and dogs, as well as other types of pets such as birds or fish. Some lines may allow passengers to bring their pets in designated areas of the ship, but this is rare.

Cruise ships also generally do not allow passengers to bring appliances or portable heaters onboard for safety reasons. This includes items such as coffee makers and electric kettles. In addition, many lines do not permit hoverboards or other types of self-balancing scooters.

Finally, many cruise ships do not allow passengers to bring large quantities of food onboard either. Most ships will provide all meals during the voyage and will not permit passengers to bring food from home unless they have special dietary needs.

Conclusion:

When taking a cruise it’s important for travelers to be aware of which items they’re allowed – or not allowed -to take onboard with them. Items prohibited on most cruises include illegal drugs, weapons, most alcoholic beverages, animals (with the exception of service animals), appliances or portable heaters and large quantities of food from home. Double-checking with your cruise line ahead of time is always recommended.
