What Clothes to Wear on a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

Cruising is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax. Cruises can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, so it is important to pack the right clothes for your trip. Cruises are generally quite formal, so it is good to plan ahead and decide what kind of clothes you want to wear. You should also consider the destination and climate; for example, if you are going on an Alaskan cruise, you will need warm clothes!

For daytime wear on a cruise ship, comfortable casual clothing is usually best. Shorts, skirts, t-shirts and sandals are all appropriate for the day time. Choose lightweight fabrics that will be comfortable in hot climates or when spending time outdoors on the ship or at ports of call.

For cooler climates or evenings spent indoors, add some layers such as a cardigan or light jacket.

When you go out for dinner on board the ship, there is usually a dress code. Most ships have at least one ‘formal night’ where men are expected to wear suits and women should dress up in cocktail dresses or evening gowns. On other nights when there isn’t a formal requirement, men should wear trousers with a shirt and women can opt for skirts or dresses.

It’s also important to think about footwear when packing for a cruise. A sturdy pair of shoes is essential if you plan on doing some sightseeing while porting; choose shoes that provide good support and grip as some ports may be cobbled streets which can be slippery. Sandals are great for beach days but make sure they have a secure strap to avoid them slipping off!
