By Robert Palmer

In 2005, the cruise ship MV Seabourn Spirit was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The attack occurred in the early morning hours on November 5th, and was the first recorded attack on a cruise ship in over 200 years. The crew of the Seabourn Spirit were able to successfully repel the attackers by using a powerful water cannon and deploying smoke screens.

The Seabourn Spirit was sailing from Egypt to Jordan when it was attacked by small motorboats carrying pirates armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. The attackers were attempting to take control of the ship and rob its passengers. However, they were unsuccessful in their attempt due to the quick response of the crew.

The crew managed to send out an emergency signal which alerted nearby ships, including a British warship, that came to assist. The British warship launched multiple flares at the pirate boats which caused them to flee. Fortunately, none of the passengers or crew were injured during this incident.
