What Cruise Ship Was Caught in Storm?

By Anna Duncan

On January 17, 2020, the cruise ship MSC Magnifica was caught in a storm with heavy winds and large waves. The ship was on its way from Venice to the Greek island of Corfu.

At approximately 3:00 am, the captain of the ship decided to reduce speed and turn back towards Venice due to the worsening conditions. The ship encountered winds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) and huge waves that reached heights of up to 10 meters (32 feet). The passengers were asked to stay in their cabins while the crew worked hard to keep the ship stable.

Passengers reported that furniture and items had been thrown around and that some windows had been broken. There were also reports of people feeling seasick due to the rough conditions. For safety reasons, all passengers were instructed to wear life jackets.

The captain informed passengers that they would be heading back towards Venice, but this was not possible due to the stormy conditions at sea. MSC Magnifica eventually made it safely back into port at around 6:30 am that same morning.
