What Cruise Ship Was Used in the Movie 2012?

By Anna Duncan

The movie 2012 was released in 2009 and became an instant classic. It starred John Cusack and Amanda Peet, and featured a star-studded cast of characters. The movie was about the world coming to an end due to a series of natural disasters caused by global warming. The climax of the movie takes place on the sea, when Cusack and Peet are trying to survive on a cruise ship as it is being destroyed by a massive tsunami.

The massive ship used in this movie was actually four different ships, but all were part of the same fleet owned by Royal Caribbean International. The ships used were Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and Mariner of the Seas.

All four ships are part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class fleet, which are some of the largest cruise ships in operation today. The ships are all over 1,100 feet long and can carry up to 5400 passengers each.

The production team had to do extensive research before they could find a fitting ship for their scene. Liberty of the Seas ended up being used for most exterior shots as it was closest in size to what they needed for their scene. All four ships had to be modified with extra decks and other props so that they would look more realistic on screen.

The entire process took months and ended up costing millions; however, it paid off as 2012 went on to become one of the highest grossing disaster movies ever made. It also won two Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing.

So in conclusion, what cruise ship was used in the movie 2012? Four different Royal Caribbean International Oasis Class ships were used during filming – Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and Mariner of the Seas – with Liberty being used for most exterior shots.
