What Did Chevy Chase Say in Christmas Vacation?

By Michael Ferguson

It’s that time of year again when families gather ’round to watch their favorite holiday films, and one that frequently makes the list is “Christmas Vacation” starring Chevy Chase as the lovable yet bumbling Clark Griswold. In this classic comedy, Chevy Chase delivers some of the most memorable lines in cinema history. One line in particular has become a fan favorite and is often quoted during the holiday season: “Shitter’s full”.

While this line may be crass, it’s undoubtedly hilarious and has cemented itself as a classic moment in the film. However, Chevy Chase delivers plenty of other funny lines throughout the movie that are worth revisiting.

For instance, when he’s struggling to untangle Christmas lights, he exclaims “Little knot here, it’s not too bad.” But as he continues to unravel the tangled mess, he becomes increasingly frustrated and eventually snaps with “FUCK!”

Another standout moment from Chevy Chase comes during an argument with his wife Ellen (played by Beverly D’Angelo) about how many lights they need for their Christmas display. Clark says “I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed..” before being interrupted by Ellen.

Throughout “Christmas Vacation,” Chevy Chase’s comedic timing is impeccable. Whether he’s delivering one-liners or physical comedy gags (like getting hit in the face with a tree branch), he keeps audiences laughing from start to finish.

In addition to his humor in front of the camera, Chevy Chase also reportedly improvised much of his dialogue on set. This allowed him to bring his own unique brand of humor to the character of Clark Griswold and helped make “Christmas Vacation” a timeless holiday classic.

So while “Shitter’s full” may be the most iconic line from Chevy Chase in “Christmas Vacation,” it’s clear that he delivered plenty of other memorable moments throughout the film. And even after all these years, his comedic performance still holds up and continues to make audiences laugh during the holiday season.
