What Do I Need for Beginner Backpacking?

By Michael Ferguson

Backpacking is an incredibly rewarding experience that can take people to some of the most incredible places in the world. It’s a great way to explore, disconnect from technology and experience something completely different.

But it can also be intimidating for a beginner. What do you need to get started?

The most important thing you need when backpacking is a good quality backpack. You want something with adjustable straps so that it fits your body type properly, and one with enough space for all of your supplies. Look for one with waterproof material and pockets for organizing your items.

Next, you’ll need a tent that is lightweight and easy to set up. Look for one that has a rainfly so you can stay dry in wet conditions, as well as something that has plenty of room for yourself or other campers. Also make sure to purchase a sleeping bag rated for the temperatures you’ll be camping in.

You’ll also need some basic cooking supplies such as a camp stove, fuel canisters, pots, pans, dishes and utensils. Don’t forget to bring along snacks and food items like oatmeal, peanut butter and other non-perishable items so you always have something to eat.

Clothing

Depending on where you are planning on backpacking it’s important to bring the right clothing. Make sure you have enough layers so that you can stay warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. Bring rain gear such as a rain jacket or poncho just in case too.

Other Essentials

Finally don’t forget about the other essentials such as sunscreen, bug spray, toilet paper, flashlights/headlamps, maps/guides, first-aid kit and any medications you may need.

Conclusion:

As a beginner backpacker there are many things to consider before heading out on your trip. By having the right gear such as a good quality backpack, tent, sleeping bag and cooking supplies – along with clothing items appropriate for the climate – you will be prepared for your adventure!
