What Do Kids Do on a Road Trip?

By Anna Duncan

Going on a road trip with kids can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be challenging. Keeping children entertained and engaged during long car rides can be a daunting task for any parent. However, with a little bit of planning and creativity, road trips can become an enjoyable experience for both kids and adults alike.

Games to Play

One of the most popular ways to keep children entertained on a road trip is by playing games. These can range from classic games like “I Spy” and “20 Questions” to more modern games like “Road Trip Bingo” or “License Plate Game.”

  • I Spy: This game involves one person choosing an object that they see within their vicinity while others take turns guessing what the object is based on the given clues.
  • 20 Questions: In this game, one person thinks of an object while others ask yes or no questions to guess what the object is within 20 questions.
  • Road Trip Bingo: Before leaving for your trip, create Bingo cards with various objects that are commonly seen on the road (e.g., stop signs, cows, a certain make of car). Cross off the objects as you spot them.
  • License Plate Game: Try to spot license plates from as many states as possible. Keep track of the states on a piece of paper.

Activities to Bring

In addition to games, there are also plenty of activities that kids can do in the car. Depending on your child’s interests, you may want to bring along coloring books or activity books that they can complete in the car. You could also create a fun scavenger hunt list that includes items such as finding certain words or images in books or magazines.

Here are some other activity ideas:

  • Audio Books: Choose a few audio books that the whole family can listen to together.
  • Magnetic Games: Magnetic games like chess or checkers can be played on a small board that can be placed on a child’s lap.
  • Sensory Activities: Bring along sensory activities like Play-Doh or slime that children can play with in the car. Just be sure to keep these items contained in small containers to avoid a mess.

Tips for Success

While games and activities are great ways to keep kids entertained, there are also some tips that parents should keep in mind to ensure a successful road trip.

  • Frequent Stops: Plan for frequent stops along the way so that kids can stretch their legs and burn off some energy.
  • Snacks: Bring plenty of snacks and drinks to avoid hunger-induced meltdowns.
  • Dress Comfortably: Dress kids in comfortable clothing and bring pillows or blankets for napping during longer car rides.

By incorporating games, activities, and these helpful tips, parents can make road trips with kids a fun and engaging experience for everyone involved.
