What Do You Do With Your Trash While Backpacking?

By Anna Duncan

When you are out backpacking, you have to be mindful of the waste that you create. As much as possible, you should strive to reduce your waste and be conscious of what you do with your trash.

The most important thing is to pack out whatever you pack in. This means that when you take items into the wilderness, you should bring them all back with you when you go. This will prevent things from getting left behind and provide a better environment for future hikers.

You can also look for ways to minimize the amount of single-use items that you take with you.

For example, use refillable containers for water and snacks instead of buying individual plastic bottles and wrappers. Also, bring a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder with a filter so that it is easier to stay hydrated without creating more waste.

When packing out your trash, make sure to separate out any recyclable materials such as aluminum cans or plastic bottles. If there is not a recycling bin available at the trailhead, then bring it home and recycle it there.

If there are no recycling facilities available in the area, then make sure to dispose of your trash properly. This means burying any biodegradable items such as food scraps or burying non-biodegradable items like plastic wrappers away from water sources.

Conclusion:

Backpacking with responsibility means being aware of the waste that you create and finding ways to reduce it whenever possible. By packing out whatever you pack in and separating out recyclable materials, as well as properly disposing of any non-biodegradable items away from water sources, we can all do our part in preserving our natural environment for future generations.
