What Do You Need for 3 Day Backpacking Trip?

By Anna Duncan

A three-day backpacking trip is a great way to get out in the outdoors, explore nature, and enjoy some much-needed time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, before you hit the trail, it’s important to make sure you’re adequately prepared with all of the necessary supplies. Here is what you need for a three-day backpacking trip.

Backpack

A good quality backpack is essential when it comes to backpacking. You will need a pack that has plenty of compartments and pockets to store all of your supplies, as well as adjustable straps so that you can customize it to fit your body type and size. Look for one with plenty of padding on the shoulders and hips for extra comfort while carrying your load.

Shelter

A shelter will protect you from the elements during your trip. You may choose to bring a tent or tarp depending on how much weight you want to carry and what type of weather conditions you’ll be facing. Make sure that whatever shelter you choose is lightweight and easy to set up.

Sleeping Bag

A sleeping bag will keep you warm at night and provide some comfort when sleeping in the outdoors. Choose one that is rated for temperatures in the area where you’ll be camping or hiking. Look for one with insulation and waterproofing materials.

Food/Cooking Gear

You’ll need food for energy throughout your trip, so make sure to bring enough food supplies including snacks, energy bars, protein powder, etc., as well as some cooking gear such as a stove, fuel canister, pots/pans/utensils, water filter/purifier, etc.

Clothing

Layering is key when it comes to backpacking apparel. You’ll want light layers that can be easily removed or added depending on weather conditions or activity level. Be sure to include items such as a waterproof jacket, breathable shirt/pants/shorts, hat/beanie/gloves etc., along with one set of clean clothes for after your hike.

Navigation Tools

It’s important to bring navigation tools such as a map and compass so that you don’t get lost while exploring unfamiliar terrain. GPS units are also useful if they are available.

These are just some of the essentials needed for a three-day backpacking trip. Other items such as first aid kits, flashlights/headlamps, sun protection tools (sunscreen/sunglasses), etc., should also be included in order to stay safe and comfortable during your excursion into nature.
