What Gear Do You Need to Start Backpacking?

By Alice Nichols

Backpacking is a great way to explore the outdoors, and it can be done on a budget. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced backpacker, there are certain items of gear that you will need to go backpacking. Here we will look at what gear do you need to start backpacking.

Backpack – This is probably the most important item of gear and it should be chosen carefully. The right backpack should be comfortable and fit your body shape.

It should also have enough capacity for all your gear, food and supplies. Make sure the straps are adjustable so you can get the perfect fit.

Tent – A tent will provide shelter from the elements and keep you dry in wet weather conditions. Choose one that has enough room for your needs, such as two people or more if necessary, and make sure it is waterproof.

Sleeping bag – A good quality sleeping bag is essential for keeping warm in cold temperatures. Choose one that is rated for the lowest temperature you expect to encounter while out on your adventure.

Cooking Equipment – You will need some basic cooking equipment such as a stove, fuel and cookware. Choose lightweight equipment that is easy to carry and make sure it is suitable for the environment you plan on visiting.

Clothing – Layering clothing is essential when backpacking as it allows you to adjust to changing temperatures during your trip.

Make sure you bring clothing made from breathable fabrics such as wool or synthetic materials as these will wick away moisture from your skin.

Footwear – Invest in a good pair of hiking boots or shoes that provide comfort but also protect your feet from rocks, roots and other obstacles on the trail. Make sure they have plenty of grip so they don’t slip while out on the trails.
