What Happened to Anthem of the Seas Cruise Ship?

By Alice Nichols

The Anthem of the Seas cruise ship was a part of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class of vessels. The vessel was launched in April 2015 and was the second of four ships in the class. The ship was designed to provide onboard experiences that were both luxurious and innovative, including a skydiving simulator, an outdoor movie theater, interactive dining options, and much more.

The Anthem of the Seas had a few unfortunate incidents involving bad weather during its first year of operation. In February 2016, the ship encountered rough seas with wind gusts over 100 mph while sailing near the coast of North Carolina.

This caused damage to some public areas as well as cabins on board. In March 2016, the vessel encountered high winds again during a trip to Florida from New Jersey. This time more significant damage occurred which included shattered windows in some cabins and broken furniture in others.

These two incidents caused Royal Caribbean to make changes to their procedures for operating ships in severe weather conditions. They also implemented additional safety measures for passengers on board their vessels including providing life vests to all guests and having them complete lifeboat drills prior to leaving port.

Despite these measures, in September 2018 the Anthem of the Seas encountered yet another storm while sailing from New York City towards Bermuda. This time an even more serious accident occurred when a large wave crashed into one side of the ship causing it to list heavily for several minutes before stabilizing itself again. No passengers were injured but this incident caused Royal Caribbean to decide that it would no longer operate the Anthem of the Seas in severe weather conditions and instead transfer it back to its homeport in Bayonne, New Jersey where it operated short cruises out of until 2020 when it began sailing longer voyages again with additional safety precautions in place.

Conclusion

What happened to Anthem of the Seas Cruise Ship? After encountering several dangerous storms during its first year at sea, Royal Caribbean made changes to their procedures for operating ships in severe weather conditions including additional safety measures for passengers onboard their vessels. Following another serious incident involving high waves in 2018, they decided not to operate the Anthem of the Seas anymore during bad weather and instead transfer it back home where it operated short cruises until 2020 when it began sailing longer voyages again with extra precautionary measures.
