What Happened to Kona Village Resort?

By Alice Nichols

Kona Village Resort was once a beloved destination for travelers seeking an authentic Hawaiian vacation experience. The resort, located on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, first opened in 1965 and quickly gained a reputation for its luxurious accommodations, stunning beachfront location, and top-notch amenities.

Over the years, Kona Village Resort became known as a hidden gem of Hawaii tourism, attracting visitors from all over the world who were looking for a unique and unforgettable vacation experience. The resort’s bungalows and cottages were nestled among lush tropical gardens and coconut groves, providing guests with privacy and seclusion. The beach was just steps away from each accommodation, offering guests easy access to world-class snorkeling, kayaking, and other water activities.

Unfortunately, in 2011 Kona Village Resort was forced to close its doors after suffering significant damage from a tsunami that struck the island. The resort had been shuttered for repairs when it was dealt another blow in 2018 when it was hit by Hurricane Lane.

Despite efforts to reopen the resort after these natural disasters, Kona Village Resort remains closed to this day. The property has changed ownership several times over the years since its closure, with various plans being made to restore and reopen the resort. However, as of now no concrete plans have been announced.

For those who had fond memories of Kona Village Resort or were hoping to visit one day soon, it’s disappointing news. However, there are still plenty of other incredible resorts on the Big Island that offer similar experiences. From luxurious beachfront hotels to secluded vacation rentals nestled in nature reserves or overlooking breathtaking mountain views – there is something for everyone.
